The Shady Oaks Plantation
The Shady Oaks Plantation Bed & Breakfast, located on U.S. 52-North in Ansonville, offers guests an opportunity to enjoy the historic significance of the antebellum mansion known locally as the General William Smith House.
In addition, new owner Don Byrd has added his eclectic style in furnishings and wall hangings that he has collected or inherited during his 35 years of teaching university-level linguistics, lecturing worldwide and authoring textbooks for governments in South America, South Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong.
The plantation property once comprised 900 acres, stretching from the plank road highway to the Pee Dee River. Cotton and tobacco were the main crops at "The Oaks."
Guests will have a choice of bedrooms (each with a private bathroom) -- one on the ground floor and four upstairs. Byrd has named the upstairs bedrooms the Red Room, Green Room, Blue Room and Black & White Room. Each bedroom has a contrasting painted wall with a fireplace.
Byrd has collected rugs from Afghanistan, Iran, Armenia and Turkey that are displayed in the hallways, stair stoops and rooms; feathered headdresses from Brazil; Turkish prints; Thai dolls and figurines; desert feathers; and Japanese masks.
